Growing up as a member of the LGBTQ+ and Latin communities, Juan Acosta faced many mental health challenges surrounding stigma, bullying, fear and uncertainty of coming out to friends and family. Now Juan is speaking up to help other LGBTQ+ and Latin youth know that it’s okay to not be okay, that it’s okay to talk about mental health and we NEED to talk about it.
In this interview, LGBTQ+ Mental Health Advocate, Activist, and Speaker, Juan Acosta, joins Queer Artist, Mental Health Advocate, and “You. Me. Honestly.” Host, X. ARI to share his story and discuss the many obstacles he’s triumphed over throughout his mental health journey. Juan opens up about how he was able to overcome suicidal ideation with the help of music. While struggling to accept and embrace his LGBTQ+ identity, “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga really helped Juan to reaffirm that who he was was okay. Juan says that for anyone who may be struggling with their identity, it’s important to get a message of support and acceptance from somewhere, and to know that resources are available.
